Lake Tahoe Cross Country Resorts

If you're looking for a great way to spend a relaxing day in the outdoors cross country skiing will fit the bill to perfection. And as famous as Lake Tahoe is for alpine skiing, it is even more so among the nordic community. Here you can find a great variety of resorts with groomed or skier packed trails. You can immerse yourself in an alpine wilderness or skate along the shores of Tahoe. You can choose between an intimate resort with an overnight backcountry cabin, or North America's largest resort and trail system. Follow the links below to Lake Tahoe's x-country resorts.

1. Royal Gorge - With 328 kilometers of extra wide groomed trails, this is North America's largest x-country resort. Tickets range from $29 for adults in high season to free for children under twelve. Afternoon and twilight rates are available.

2. Kirkwood Cross Country - Eighty kilometers of groomed trails with numerous warming huts and a day lodge. Beautiful Alpine setting. Passes are $22 for adults and $8 for kids.

3. Heavenly Lake Tahoe - While Heavenly is Tahoe's largest alpine resort, it is the smallest x-country area. It is the most expensive of either. The area is located at Adventure Peak, at the top of the gondola. Tickets are $20 for two hours plus the cost of a gondola ride.

4. Tahoe Cross Country - 65 Kilometers of groomed trails on the outskirts of Tahoe City. Tickets are $21 for adults, children under 10 are free. Half day and twilight rates are available.

5. Hope Valley Outdoors - 100 kilometers of skier packed (no grooming) trails. This area is free, but you can help by buying a homemade pie at the outdoor center.

6. Spooner Lake - Eighty kilometers of groomed trails, many with views of Lake Tahoe. Overnight lodging is available in their new backcountry cabin. Trail passes range from $21 for adults to free for children.

7. Camp Richardson - 35 Kilometers of trails, some groomed. Camp Rich offers trails along the shores of Tahoe. Skiing and lodging packages are available.

8. Squaw Creek Cross Country - Based at the Resort at Squaw Creek, these trails, which follow the resorts beautiful golf course, are open to the general public.

9. Northstar at Tahoe Nordic Ski Center - Over 50 Km of groomed trails. Passes are $27 for adults and $15 for children.

10. Sugar Pine Point State Park - Offers four cross country trails, two of which are along Tahoe's beautiful western shore. Call ahead for this one ( 530-525-7982 ).

11. Tahoe Donner Cross Country - Over 100 kilometers of trails of all abilities. A wonderful way to spend a day. Rates range from$21 to free for kids 12 and under. Half day and twilight rates are available.
