There are two very different
faces to Kirkwood, and then many different expressions to each. Many
people think of Kirkwood's extreme face, which is well documented on
this site as well as dozens of others. What most people don't know is
that the Timber Creek area features some of the best learning terrain
in Tahoe. This is long, gentle, beginner terrain in an offset area of
the mountain with it's own lodge and three lifts.
Most people know of the legendary steeps within Kirkwood's boundaries.
More are now becoming aware of the quality of the backcountry
just outside the access gates. When the gates are open, you
can find great lines heading out of Kirkwood in any direction. Speaking
of backcountry access, Kirkwood and BackcountryAccess have teamed up to
present Beacon Basin, an avalanche beacon training area in the heart of
the village. The wood may be home to great big mountain style skiing,
but the park scene also rips, with the biggest kicker sitting right in
front of the village for everyone to see.
The summer features many expressions as well. While it's still the same
rugged Kirkwood we've come to know and love, it also has a softer side.
Wildflowers are abundant as the snow melts and the water rushes down
the gullies and percolates from the porous igneous rock. Kirkwood
Mountain is also home to a championship disc golf course, Discwood, as
well as horseback riding and the South Shore's only mountain bike park.
The summer brings wildflower
festivals, wine tastings, and chili cookoffs with live music and fun
for the whole family.
