This terrain is easily accessible by foot when access is allowed via the top of Sunrise Chair (4). Snowboarders beware! While the hike there is often on windblown hardpack, there is also a long hike out through the flats, and always deep powder. For skiers its easy both ways. In fact, the West Shore area requires only a short skate in and traverse out. Keep in mind these areas are outside the ski area boundary and when access is allowed, proper precautions should be taken, including avalanche beacon and the know-how to use it, shovel, friend, weather information, and common sense. Parts of the West Shore area involve very steep terrain and rollovers to nowhere. Local knowledge is essential. Click here for topo map.

When entering the backcountry, proper precautions should be taken, including avalanche beacon and the know-how to use it, shovel, compass or GPS, friend, weather information, and common sense. Click here for thelatest avalanche advisory info. You can also find more info on our gear pages.
