Sand Harbor -
Lake
Tahoe-Nevada State Park
Nevada's east
shore is not
known for it's sandy beaches... except for Sand Harbor. While most
Nevada side beaches have coarse sand that is tough on the feet, Tahoe's
prevailing breezes deposit a fine grained white sand here that is the
harbor's namesake. However, the area's beauty is derived from the
numerous rocks as much as the sand. It's not just about the beauty
above water, either. Scuba diving and snorkelling are both very popular
here.
Sand Harbor is located on Highway 28 approximately ten miles north of
the Hwy 50 junction at Spooner Summit or 2.5 miles south of Incline
Village, Nv. There are two entrances, the northernmost of which is
reserved for the boat ramp.
Group Area
This is one of the
finest
public outdoor beach facilities you will find. It has a separate
parking area, separate beach area with fantastic views, a pavilion with
central grill, fire area, and running water.
Note:
Guests arriving by car on busy days should arrive before 11:00 am or
after3 pm. Once the general parking area is full, the entire parking
lot is closed, even if there are open spots in the group area!
Concessions
Concessions and a
restaurant
are available on site. Parking will range from $7 to $12, depending on
when you visit. A boat launch is also available when water depths
permit.
Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival
One of the most
awaited
festivals each year is the Lake
Tahoe Shakespeare Festival at Sand Harbor. The festival,
after a modest beginning at Sugar Pine Point 24 years ago, now garners
attention as one of the nation's outstanding outdoor cultural
events. This year's festival at Sand
Harbor (July 13 - August 26, 2012) will feature The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
(the abridged edition), 'Measure for
Measure' and 'Much Ado about Nothing' plus the always popular The
D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program providing 15 free
matinees suitable for children. Another special treat is the Sand Harbor Music Series,
providing live music lakeside on Monday and Friday nights.
