Red Lake is one of the easier (10K+)
peaks to
access year round and makes for a great car shuttle tour in the
winter.The only easier peak to
summit would be Monument Peak and you'd need a Heavenly lift ticket for
that one. Leaving a car at the top
and bottom of Carson Pass saves you about 2,400 feet of earning your
turns. Park in the Meiss Meadows (Carson Pass north) lot and hop on one
of the trails. You can also park at numerous spots along highway 88
which allows for an easy shuttle. In summer you can take a rough FS
road up (or close to) Crater Lake. The peak has fantastic views,
including Lake Tahoe. After Crater Lake the pitch back to the car
provides excellent glade skiing in winter snow or corn. Others will
climb back up to the East Buttress for a fantastic corn or powder run
back to the car. To the north of the peak is Meiss Meadows and theTahoe
Rim Trail. To the east is Stevens Peak.
If you park at Carson Pass you must have a Sno Park Permit,
which can
be purchased at the Roadrunner or Chevron on the way out of Lake Tahoe
in Meyers. If you're coming from the west, Kirkwood usually has a
supply, but try to get one beforehand because if they are out you're
hosed.
